Adventure on the Northern Adventurer

Rough seas forced a BC ferry to turn back. The passengers got their adventure on the Northern Adventurer. http://www.canada.com/ferry+turns+ba...985/story.html They picked a good name for the ferry on that route it seems.

Sounds like that had everything but an iceberg. Apparently B.C. ferries knew a major storm was coming but sent the ship out in any case. Many people are saying this ferry is not appropriate for rough North Pacific waters. Hope this isn't going to be like another fast ferry fiasco. But I think B.C. Ferries has some explaining to do. From what was being said people were literally scared out of their mind and thought the boat was going to turn over.

Never heard of any difficulty with weather with the ship they sunk. Of course the whole operation was perhaps run different in years past. They knew bad weather was due but still sailed this time.

There would have been copious complaints if they hadn't sailed.

That's for sure... I'm surprised they went out with the kind of forecast that was there... but I don't blame them one bit for trying because no day is a good day really. It's hard to say what storm will be the one that just blows through and what one blows you back.

I've been in Hecate Strait in July and we had waves higher than the poles on our troller (40ft?) and only gale force winds. I thought it was pretty cool at the time... even though the stabilizers were swinging into the boat and my sleeping bag got a soaker in the folkshole and my dad was less than enthralled....

I'm just glad they all got back OK and all that was damaged were some dishes and a thruster.

As beautiful as she was, I doubt the Queen of the North would have been any better... it just didn't have a bow thruster to bust. Still lots of dishes. Nothing comes out unscathed in 40-50ft waves driven by 90kph winds.

There is this from Global : http://www.globaltvbc.com/critic+con...985/story.html This is what I have thought all along. The choice of this boat was ill suited for the waters it is used in. I still say the Queen of the North was much better suited for the Northern waters. It was buit for rough seas. They sure are having problems on this route that we never heard much of for years.

Those are questions that must be answered. From what I've heard the Queen of the North was better suited to the rough waters of the North pacific. Of course no ferry in designed to hit an Island at full speed without sinking.
