Organic Farmers to Present at Food and Filosophy
Because we will be celebrating the B.C.Lions win over Winnipeg, I will not be present at the meeting at Abbeyfield. We will close this club, and begin again on January 30th , 2012. On that evening, we will be having another special presentation by Gordon Scoffield. He will be giving us another brush with Shakespeare. This time, we do Romeo and Juliet. If you are brave enough, you may want to read this play in preparation for Gordon’s presentation. We need to have some representatives from Port Alberni on such an important occasion. Thanks for your understanding.
FOOD AND FILOSOPHY: Cathy and Kerry will be our special guest. I told you about these presenters last week, and now we have a note telling you what to expect on December 5th at Dolce Vita at 5:30 p.m. Here is a note to me from Cathy:
"Hi Winston, we bought the far about 8 years ago, and both of us being from the city, the learning curve towards becoming organic farmers was pretty steep. The land.with its rich black peat soil was perfect for blueberries, among other crops, so we have been expanding both our blueberry field and vegetable gardens in the past few years. Along the way, we have learned a lot about how food is grown, and would like to share some of our experiences with the group."
Why organic? Modern industrialized agriculture has become too dependent on chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, etc, with little concern for people’s health. Organic farming is simply a way returning to a natural
system, following nature’s example. It has been said that Vancouver Island has only a 3-4 day supply of food, should our distribution systems be interrupted, so that is a good reason to look at how we can all take parting ensuring a sustainable food supply for ourselves and our neighbours.
We look forward to talking about this on December 5th with the Food and Filosophy group. This group is open to all the people in Port Alberni, so consider yourself a member..Take care, Cathy and Kerry.
You are not going to miss this special occasion, and it might be your turn to bring to this group another toipic of interest. On behalf of the group, thanks to you both.
CALLING ALL RETIRED TEACHERS IN THE VALLEY! Here is a great time to meet your colleagues. We meet for the main purpose of being with each other. Many members have said that they are fed up with formal meeting. Here is the place for you. Here is an opportunity of coming to our annual luncheon in the basement of Abbeyfield, on December 15th at 11:30 A.M. You can enjoy a turkey dinner catered by Dave from Smitty’s, and the price is only $17.00 per person, and HST and tip are already added. Do help us to make the collection of this money as speedy as possible. Bring along the exact change. Winston and Wayne will be doing a 50/50 draw. There will be a box for donation for the bursary fund. If you are making a donation of $25.00 or more, be sure to have you name, address and amount recorded, because we will then be able to give you a receipt for your 2012 income take return, probably in September. There will also be a box for food donation for The Bread of Life. Thanks for this information that was supplied to me by Wayne Janzen. Thinking of coming? Phone Katie Lekich: 250-723-9146.
