Wellness in the Valley

Wellness in the Valley

How are we all doing with those resolutions we set back in January? ‘Getting Healthy’ comes in as the number one resolution for most people, followed closely by ‘Getting Organized’ and ‘Live Life to the Fullest’. I can almost guarantee that if you commit to getting healthy, the other two will fall into place. As many of us will be indulging in chocolate this weekend, we’ve put together this list of your local resources for getting and staying healthy in 2018!

Go for a spin

For many the first thing that comes to mind is going to the gym. Committing to a class will bring the reward of fitness and new friends. We have a couple great facilities in town including Slammers Gym and Alberni Fitness. Watch for spring offerings including discounts and other benefits.

If you are intimidated by joining a gym, try a spin class. No one knows what tension is on your bike. It’s up to you to ramp it up when you feel you are ready.
Looking for toning the body? Drop a pant size? Try strength training classes.

If the gym isn’t your thing there are plenty of classes including Zumba, yoga and spin classes. There is racket ball at the Racket Ball club, a pickle ball club has been started, and of course countless ball teams, soccer or rowing. Check with Parks and Recreation for more information. The City produces a guide each season with the full listings of classes and offerings throughout the community for all ages.  (https://www.portalberni.ca/parks)

Purge your house and cleanse your body

Perhaps you’re more of an introvert. That’s OK! You can pick another type of resolution like drinking more water or quitting sugar. We have three great health food stores locally that have well-informed staff who are always willing to share their knowledge and offer assistance where they can. There are other resources such as dietitians, naturopathic doctors, medical doctors and acupuncturists that can certainly assist you with getting your system on the right path. Many of those practitioners can be found at the Alberni Natural Health Group.

As for getting organized, don’t get overwhelmed. Start small. Clean out a drawer, a corner or a closet. Then complete the task by donating the unwanted clutter to charity. The newly organized space will compel you to continue through the cabinet, the room and the house.

Get outside

And last but certainly NOT LEAST. Take advantage of our endless trails and outdoor activities. Simply getting outside and into nature everyday can have tremendous health benefits and effects on our wellbeing. Reach out to the outdoor club for group hikes and information.
