Bulldogs - A Community Owned Team

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs Junior A hockey team has a motto; “Our Community – Our Team”. In order to ensure the team stays in the Alberni Valley, a society has been formed to purchase controlling interest in the team. The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society is currently blitzing the community with the goal of raising the initial $500,000 to purchase 51% of the team from the current majority owners, the Okanagan Hockey School. And, time is of the essence! The $500,000 has to be in place by June 1st, in order to complete the negotiation and have the proposal in front of the BC Junior Hockey League’s Board of Governors in time for their June meeting. The team has had its up’s and down’s over the past ten years, but the Bulldogs continually attract excellent crowds. They are averaging 1,000 to 1,500 per game and more for play-offs. The strong fan base, economic spin-off and high calibre of hockey have the society convinced they can raise the half-a-million through tax deductible, $200 Donors Club or $5,000 Founders Club donations. The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society is currently being chaired by Darren DeLuca with directors; Bob Cole, Al McCulloch, David McCormick and Tom McEvay. The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board for the award given for our new Visitor Centre and office complex. The awards dinner was excellent and congratulations are in order to all who were nominated and the winners in each category. There were some spectacular buildings constructed and renovations completed in 2011 and it was an honour to be included with them. Thanks to all the sponsors of this annual event (including Business VI) and to our nominator, Coast Realty.
