The Chamber Welcomes New Port Staff

Kudos to the Port Alberni Port Authority for the great job of up-grading the Fishermen’s Wharf area with new breakwaters and ramps and soon-to-come improved access to the floats. The main breakwater is huge – much bigger than most expected. Depending on sport fishing regulations this summer, you could quite easily land a big Chinook from that float. The potential for sea plane service and cruise ship tender boats also come to mind. The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome the three new faces on the Port Authority staff and one new director. The new Harbour Master is Steve Baxter, late of Halifax NS. The new Terminal Manager is Jon French, late of Guelph, Ont., and the new CEO is Zoran Knezevic, late of the lower mainland. We welcome them all to the valley and hope they have a great experience here for a long time to come. New to the board of directors of the Port Authority is Ron Crema.
The Shop Alberni campaign is going great guns with shoppers picking up their cards, showing them at participating merchants to receive great discount deals. We have more than a thousand cards out now but we can use more participating merchants. If you’re wondering whether the promotion will work for you, just ask the merchants that are in the program. You will find that they are doing well and their traffic has increased. For a list of what businesses are taking part and what their discount specials are, check our website (avcoc.com) and watch for the display ads in the Times and News. For more information call our office.
So, how’s your beard coming in? Remember, the chamber is sponsoring a Beard and Bonnet judging event August 4th at the homecoming celebration at Bob Dailey Stadium. The beard judging will include the following categories: best overall beard, best moustache, best fake beard. Women and children’s bonnets: 6 yrs. and under – best bonnet, 7 – 12 yrs. of age – best bonnet and womens: best bonnet and best historical reproduction. Get your beards and moustaches growing and you could walk away with a nice prize.
