Default New Co-Op(erative) Recycling Co-op - be an owner!

Congrats! what a innovative idea! This is exactly what should be encouraged, this type of business, and this innovative model!

Way to go Sunbird! Brilliant!

From the Alberni Valley News (click link to read entire article)

Sunbird looks to go co-op
Sunbird Disposal and Recycling will launch a new co-operative initiative in May that will give clients ownership and a say over their recycled goods.

The idea would be similar to the Alberni Co-op gas station. Clients would buy shares in Sunbird Recycling, in effect buying a stake in ownership.

The fee structure would be such that in return for recycling properly members would be charged a reduced fee per month, and be issued dividends at the end of the year.

It’s not a new concept. But instead of being applied to fuel, it’s instead being shrewdly transposed over recycled goods.

I think it's a wonderful concept, I just wonder what they're clienteke is going to be...So does this mean they're going to go head to head with the ACRD on recycling? Thats what the article seems to imply. I'm confused!

I'm not sure who was in charge of "opting in" Beaver Creekers.
I was never asked, no vote was taken to my knowledge (maybe my invitation was lost in the mail).
I filled out a questionaire at one of the meetings last year and said I was NOT interested in this.
Now we will have a Co-op recycling place, an idea I like, but if it's picked up at my house.......well, I won't need both.

Wonderful - as a long time customer and presumably soon to be owner I look forward to sitting on the board of directors and casting my vote. I will begin by proposing a new accounting person to be sure that all invoices and dividends are sent out in a timely manner.

I like this idea a lot. I opted in about 10 seconds after RC told me what her and her husband were planning. I think that Hatfield et al will be stymied in their attempt to sell out the valley to an international cartel and this may screw up some plans for retirement.

On a side note, I know our invoice is due quartly so we just send a cheque at the appropriate time.

Why generate more recycling?

Possum:

Jen makes a very good point that the best way to insulate ourselves from high food prices is to grow as much food as possible as close to ourselves as possible. (including in our own garden)

There is a chance. A Chance.

That we may be facing a situation not dissimilar to World War 2 when "Victory Gardens" helped feed Canadians in a time when energy and food was directed toward the war effort.

On a less dire note though... the fact is that over the past 30 years the Alberni Valley has lost many many agriculture assets and businesses. The Valley is one of the most prolific places on the Island with one of (if not the) longest growing seasons.... it would serve us very well to do things like encourage a Dairy, more farming, and other husbandry so as to ensure as much food as possible is available right here in our neck-o-the-woods.
