UPCOMING COMMUNITY SOCIAL EVENT DETAILS

Sat, Oct 14th, 8-10pm, Concert – CFMA multi-nominated Jon Brooks w/Brickhouse’s Neil Cruickshank

“I write songs to calm those who’ve looked into, and seen, what is in their hearts.”

“I also write songs to terrify those who have not.” – Jon Brooks

Nearing the end of a year of travel in 1997 throughout Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and particularly, throughout war ruined Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jon Brooks discovered what kind of song he wanted to write. In 2005, he began writing and performing that song – the song that looks for the soul of things. In 2010 Jon became the fourth Canadian since 1975 to win the prestigious Kerrville (TX) New Folk Award.  Founder of The Kerrville Folk Festival, the late Rod Kennedy, said of Jon: “(Brooks) speaks and sings words that need to be spoken and sung and he does it beautifully, perfectly, and with absolute finesse.” He has now been nominated four times for ‘English Songwriter of the Year’ by the Canadian Folk Music Awards (2007, 2009, 2012, and 2015). Jon’s fifth album, The Smiling and Beautiful Countryside, was released November 1, 2014 by Borealis Records and was nominated for two 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards: ‘Contemporary Album of the Year’ and ‘English Songwriter of the Year.’

Fri, Oct 20th, 8-10pm, Concert – Monik Nordine Jazz Trio CD Release Tour

Monik (alto saxophone, vocals)   Tony Genge (piano)   Bruce Meikle (acoustic bass)

The Monik Nordine Trio announces the release of their CD The Old-New Town in October and Novemeber, 2017.  The album features Monik Nordine on alto saxophone and vocals as well as band mates Brent Jarvis and Bruce Meikle for a jazz trio of exceptional artistry.  The album is dedicated to the memory of Canadian composer and pianist Jan Jarczyk who’s composition “The Old-New Town” is the title track, as well as featuring new compositions by Nordine.

Nordine's compositions on The Old New Town highlight a writing approach that is thoughtful and lyrical.  There is a nod to the American Songbook with songs based on standards such as “All the Things You Are” by Jerome Kern and “I Fall In Love Too Easily” by Jule Styne.  The track “Yin and Yang”, is a suite in the style of John Coltrane based simultaneously on a Hindu hymn and the Gil Evans composition “La Nevada”.  As one of BC’s top soprano and alto jazz saxophonists, Nordine has a powerful, lyrical, and impressive command of the saxophone. She has received several prestigious arts awards and she performed on the JUNO-nominated Cruel Yet Fair, with the Hard Rubber Orchestra.

Born in Karlstad, Sweden in 1966, saxophonist and composer Monik Nordine has lived on the West Coast of Canada for most of her life and spent her formative years on Salt Spring Island. Her first gigs at age 16 were at the Vesuvius Pub backing a local vocalist.

In 1984 she moved to Vancouver to attend Vancouver Community College where she studied saxophone with David Branter and met Alan Matheson. Working with Alan’s big band Monik met many of the important jazz players in and around Vancouver. During that time she was also introduced to Campbell Ryga, who became her main influence on the alto saxophone and who was a great mentor to her. Her projects there included her own bands and others, such as Fred Stride, Gary Guthman, Ian MacDougall, Jan Stirling, Mother of Pearl, Entropy, John Korsrud and The Hard Rubber Orchestra. Monik worked as a free-lance musician and went to school in Vancouver until 1993 when she finished her Bachelor of Music degree at the University of British Columbia and decided to move to Montreal.

Montreal offered a broad range of artistic opportunities. There she worked with Holly Arsenault, Dinah Vero and the Diamonds, Mathieu Leger, Hassan Elhadi, Lilys Tigers, various latin bands such as A Comer and Barbara Barbara and the Amazons as well as her own groups which she presented at local Montreal jazz venues. In Montreal she became a composer through the mentorship of Jan Jarczyk, who was also her professor at McGill University and where she eventually completed a Masters Degree in Music in 1997. During those years she studied saxophone with Mike Allen and Remi Bolduc and recorded on three albums: Suite No.3: The Cycle of Life with the pianist Alex Clements, Twisted with Mathieu Leger and her own album not just to but over the moon, featuring her own compositions. On a Vancouver visit she also made an appearance on Cruel Yet Fair with The Hard Rubber Orchestra, which was later nominated for a West Coast Music Award.

Before returning to her hometown on Salt Spring Island to raise her child in 2000, Monik traveled to London to study with Evan Parker, Stan Sulzmann and Kenny Wheeler. She also made a brief stopover in New York with Jane Ira-Bloom. Since then she has become a grass-roots organizer and Artistic Director of the Salt Spring Jazz Festival. She also performed with Michael Bublé, Rob McConnell, P.J. Perry, Paul Horn, Mike Allen, Chase Sanborn, Hugh Fraser and VEJI, Tommy Banks, Brad Turner and Phil Nimmons and recorded four more albums: Blue Comedy with Pat Coleman, This Blue with Smilin' Jack Smith, Departure with the band Departure and Three Days in Winter with The Jon Miller Quartet. She now lives and works in Victoria, BC where she leads her jazz trio The Monik Nordine Trio, runs the Victoria Jazz Orchestra and teaches at The Victoria Conservatory of Music.

“…facile in her execution and fluid in the spinning out of her melodic ideas.”   - Rick Helzer, Jazz Improv Magazine (Vol. 2, No. 1)

Sat, Oct 21st, 8-10pm, Concert – Rick Scott and Nico Rhodes: ROOTS & GROOVES Album Release

Forty years apart in age, self-taught dulcimer player and classically trained pianist blur all boundaries in a smorgasbord of folk, blues and soul. In a word, they cook!  What do you get when you combine an infamous roots artist with a rising jazz star, seasoned expertise and youthful exuberance, old school groove with Broadway chops?  ROOTS & GROOVES is a multi genre conversation across the generations spiced with improvisation, innovation and humour.

At 27, Nico Rhodes is in constant demand as a musical director for long run stage shows when not touring with chanteuse Joelle Rabu. “Nico Rhodes is astonishing, you have to hear and see him caress, cajole and at times almost punish the piano. Breathtakingly fresh sounds and style radiate from this young musician.”

Since pioneering rogue folk with iconic BC trio Pied Pumkin, Rick Scott has performed in nine countries and released 19 recordings honoured with 3 Juno nominations, WCMA and Canadian Folk Music Awards.  “Rick Scott is an enchanter, an alchemist creating gold out of dross with music as his catalyst. He uses every fibre of his being to translate private experience into shared experience.
Rick says, “Nico Rhodes is on fire. At his age I was touring far and wide with Pied Pumkin and this harkens back to that unfettered creativity. It’s thrilling to play some of my earliest tunes reinvigorated and reimagined by Nico’s originality and brilliance.”
Nico says, “My childhood playlist was Beethoven, Piaf, Oscar Peterson and Rick Scott. I wrote Rick a fan letter when I was 8 and when I was 23 he hired me to orchestrate his music for Symphony. The guy oozes groove, we shake each other up and the audience gets to come along for the good times. Playing with Rick is the most fun I’ve ever had on stage and a childhood dream come true.”
ROOTS & GROOVES was recorded live from the floor in a single day at Mountain View Studios, Nanaimo. Produced by Valley Hennell. Recorded & mixed by Rick Salt. All songs written by Rick Scott except ‘The Mystery’ by Max Ochs. More info & tour details www.rickscott.ca/roots-grooves .  Video Link: Recording THE MYSTERY https://youtu.be/hGP2W57zS9I

Sun, Oct 22nd, 2-5pm, Film: LUTHER (2003 film starring Joseph Fiennes, Alfred Molina, Sir Peter Ustinov).

Why was Martin Luther named by TIME Magazine as one of the top ten most influential persons of the last millennium?

And why was Martin Luther the only person of the Reformation named on the big cedar tree rings in Ucluelet?

And why is it that Martin Luther King Sr was so inspired by this 16th century monk that he changed his and his son’s name?

Come to Char’s Landing on Sunday, September 22 for a public showing of the movie ‘Luther’.

After the show we will discuss the questions that pop up about this man whose actions had secular as well as sacred consequences that live on to this day.

Doors open at 2 PM.  Film starts at 2:30 PM.  Admission by donation.

(The bar will also be open.  Come and raise a glass with Martin!).

Co-sponsored by Trinity Anglican Lutheran Church and Char’s Landing.

Fri, Oct 27th, 8-10pm, Concert – Sue Decker – slide guitar – acoustic roots & blues

Acoustic roots and blues with slide guitar a mix of originals and covers

Sue Decker’s soulful voice and slide guitar hold the audience gently while travelling through territory that is beautiful and expansive, sometimes dark, and always life-giving. Her songs embody the spirit of early blues, folk, bluegrass and country music. She’s come a long way since learning her first chords on a rented guitar at the Northern Bluegrass Circle jam in Edmonton. Thus began Sue’s relentless pursuit of music. Or has the music been pursuing her? The chance to play dobro for the first time at a late-night festival jam, discovering a deep affinity for singing the blues, the whispers of unwritten songs—Sue has dedicated herself to developing these gifts. She’s just as likely to meet her muse in Rumi’s poetry or at a campground in Wyoming as she is in a Bessie Smith recording. Her down-to-earth and playful connection with the audience harnesses it all in the simple power of sharing a song. After enjoying the company of cherished musician friends on stages around Edmonton for a few years, Sue answered her muse’s call to create a solo show. The west coast came calling as well and Sue now makes music from her home in Victoria, BC.
