Thu, Mar 2nd, 7-9pm, Concert – Marina & The Specks plus No Mothers

- A night of psychedelic folk and furious fiddles

Marina & The Specks: psychedelic opera folk. Sprouting from classical, jazz, soul and theatrical roots, this is a folk trio with a Psychedelic Opera twist! Marina writes about life, death, stormy weather, alley cats, and cosmic love. Spencer Symington joins in on electric guitar to add intricate ambiance, while John Kastelic shreds elegant and torrential magic on his viola, sings back-up harmonies & dances with foot percussion. Combining dynamic vocals with provocative storytelling, this is a show to cheer the heart, heal the spirit and arouse the senses.  http://marinalagace.com/

No Mothers: fiddle folk rock.  John and Tony Kastelic left their home in the southern Alberta prairies and made their way to the west coast, forming No Mothers on the audacious hunch that a band fronted by two violists could folk-rock with the best of them.  Drawing on their classical training, a background in fiddle, their innovative song-crafting skills, and a taste for the raw and groovy, the Brothers K lay claim to a sound that is unequivocally unique. Let's face it -- stereo-viola folk rock is a bizarre and delightful stretch of the imagination.  http://nomothers.ca/   https://youtu.be/piRjj4avRkw

Marina & the Specks

Extended Bio for Marina Lagacé:

Marina has been singing since the cradle. Somewhere amidst the lullabies, arias and musical theatre, she tripped over funk rock and landed at a folk festival. After graduating from the University of Victoria with a degree in Theatre (2010), Marina quickly fell in love with guitar, and began writing prolifically. In addition to performing professionally in over three dozen plays and musicals, Marina wrote, directed and starred in a musical entitled, Confessions of A Clown College Drop-Out (2012).

Her songs weave earthy warmth into the soaring heights of the cosmos. Marina sings of life and death, longing and gratitude, human evolution and infinite love. Wielding an expansive vocal range, provocative lyrics and inspiring melodic hooks, Marina has gained a reputation in the BC music scene as an up and coming song-writer and performer.

Marina released her first EP entitled, é (Eh?) in June, 2012. Her first full-length, professional album Cosmic Mobile was released in August, 2015. Six Sweet and Silly Summer Songs is the name of her ukulele album, released in June, 2016.

Currently based in Vancouver, Marina performs solo, sometimes with a full band, and most often as a trio with Spencer Symington on lead guitar and John Kastelic on viola and back-up vocals. When accompanied she performs as Marina & the Specks. She has toured Western Canada, played extensively in Vancouver and Vancouver Island, performed at The Woodstove Festival 2016 in Cumberland, The Campbell Bay Music Fest in 2015, and on the Reverbia stage at Burning Man in 2014 and 2015. Capable of leading a full band, or powerfully holding the stage as a solo artist, Marina Lagacé is a provocative songwriter who delivers an emotionally engaging performance every time.

No Mothers

Long Bio

Pushing the limits of how much ruckus can be made by two humans and their fiddles, the Brothers K holler out songs of whiskey, sagebrush, love, yodeling, The Other Side, pirates, bicycles, and skeletons dancing in the grave. Aided by their friendly beards and mighty violas, Tony and John easily walk the not-so-fine line between bellowing fury and cosmic sentimentality. Never afraid of ANYTHING, their shows are a raucous mix of original songs and fresh spins on old favorites. Possessing the hearts, ears, and skeletons of folks since December 20, 2012, No Mothers has arisen from the ashes of the apocalypse-that-only-sort-of-happened as one of the most original and entertaining folk acts you'll ever stomp along with.

The Brothers K grew up in the town of Coalhurst in southern Alberta, just west of Lethbridge on The Crowsnest Highway. They started playing violin as kids, as so many do, but they wised up in their mid teens, each taking up the viola as their fiddle of choice. One after the other, they moved to Vancouver to engage in the Extremely Serious Pursuit of getting an University Eduction in music. After graduating, one after the other, they wised up again and got serious about taking their music to the people. Rock and roll is forever, and rock and roll on the viola is like spending eternity in a heaven made of blackstrap molasses.

They both love their mother very much.
